Good Morning!
Technique #2 is one I typically use with my high-functioning autistic and neurodivergent clients, paying close attention to what is different in the sandtray.
I went over the prompt in my training video and have it saved in this week’s tab, so you can easily look over it and maybe try it with your own client(s)!
It’s important to use more nuanced feeling words like frustrated vs jealousy or grief vs disappointment, rather than basic terms (mad/sad).
You are also free to change it up in the sandtray! Normally, the client does all the building, and we don’t touch anything in the sand ... however, sometimes it can be beneficial to switch roles and have them watch us build in the sand and create a tray.
This prompt is created to help expand the client’s vocabulary and be able to better understand their feelings, which then can help them be able to communicate better to those around them and their environment.
Something to note during this prompt is to try not using regular non-directive instructions, as it can be difficult for the client to process and follow.
Breaking the prompt into simple step-by-step instructions will make it easier for the client to follow along, which you can assess depending on each client and their specific needs.
View my prompt below.
That’s all for today, have an amazing week!
